Backpacking in a Monsoon, Episode Three: Egg Soup and Hiking the Loop
In this series, I decided to go backpacking despite a huge band of monsoonal moisture that was making its way through Utah at the end of July, 2021. The weather was moody, at times clear with sunny skies, at others a torrential downpour that made me question what I was thinking trying to camp in such conditions. This is episode three, which consisted of eating a pretty nasty breakfast, followed by a hike from Jewel Lake to Cutthroat Lake, and eventually to Teal Lake. It was easily one of the more breathtaking hikes I’ve ever done. The scenery was spectacular. Meanwhile, the clouds began to gather again…

I sometimes question putting a tarp over a tent because the tent is supposed to be the end all shelter. I like a tarp to cook under though. I normally use a tarp and bivybag.
Dang Buddy, so freaking beautiful! Thanks so much for sharing. … M.
Hey Steve. Yes your body heat will push the moisture out of your down jacket. Best thing to do is wear it. Also I always carry a baggy of instant mashed potatoes to add to dehydrated meals that have to much water. Soaks it up and adds flavor if you use the flavored potatoes. Thanks for sharing.
Stick the phone in a bag of Rice and maybe that will get what got in there. I've had mine do that too.
what a beautiful walk to teal lake, that was so awesome out there, the ponds and the other lake before Teal Lake. Wow, what a drop off right at Teal Lake. I could see myself walking right over that cliff and not realize it. Those egg nuggets do sound weird. My bird likes eating eggs, boiled eggs…he will scream when he sees me boiling my eggs and he screams and runs up and down in his cage until I give him a piece. Good points on those disney movies.
Nice one Steve. I didn’t know there were other lakes up in that area you could so readily hike to. Would be fun to hammock camp at Teal
Really pretty area! Too bad about the rain- lovely lakes! 👍⛰⛰
What a moist trip. Trippy about your phone and jacket
Long adventure.
