The cemetery where Grandma Gatewood is buried (Ohio Valley Memory Gardens) would like to erect a statue for Grandma Gatewood to share her story. If you'd like to help keep her memory alive you can contribute here:

Well done. One of your best. Thank you.
We need more individuals like you and Grandma Gatewood in this world. I’m just so impressed, thank you for sharing a piece of her story, gift-wrapped in this beautiful video. 💟☮️
Good video Dixie. I’ve spent time on trail in everyday street clothes. I can tell you it is not as comfortable, but not unbearable.
God Bless you Emma R. Gatewood, and thanks for inspiring us to be all that we can be in the wild, and as human beings. Amen..
OMG Dixie, just think if you had been there a lot sooner, that tree might of landed on you, that's crazy how trees can fall dead like that unexpectedly, dang.. Get that Lottery Ticket and Grandma's Peach Ice Tea. lol
Hello Dixie. I was wondering what kind of gray pills were those that you had tossed into your drinking canteen?, I have never seen that before.
Back in my earlier boy scout days when I finished as an Eagle Scout in Up State New York, I was gifted an old boy scout canteen. I remember taking many camping hikes along with me, and it was the best canteen ever, despite the age of the thing. I am sure my canteen had many past Scouts using it as well, so it definitely had history alongside of me. Grandma Gatewood is definitely a legend to many of us inspired hikers and campers, this is wonderful experience, and I am sure it was challenging as well. Great Video.
I was recently searching on Amazon looking for an updated Boy scout field guide maunal, because it gives you tons of great survival information when your out there in the wilderness that anybody can utilize and pick up. From different styles of Tie nots, to knowing and understanding the terrain as well as tons of history and skills to learn that even we've totally forgotten about.
Very nice tribute to Grandma Gatewood!
Nice touch with the flowers at the end.
❤️
Warm rocks great for your back.
God bless the park rangers
Oh my shaking in your boots
Gorgeous. That's all I can say.
Really nice. I’ve watched your videos for almost three years and you can still do compelling and interesting videos. Congrats
I simply loved this video and your remarkable tribute to Grandma Gatewood. Beautiful.
I think it is so awesome to watch someone I admire walking a trail that I know and have been on myself.
I can't believe you were actually at hocking hills, My family hike hocking hills at least once a year if not twice. I love Hocking Hills.
Heated rocks were called "belly warmers" by old timey folks who slept under wool blankets. I have slept that way a time or two myself. If you have an extra pair of socks, you can wrap the heated rocks in them and they will last longer. Hug the rock next to your belly and it will work fine.If you scrape out a "hip hole," you'll have a place where your hips can lay down into. I've found it more comfy to scrape out a trench perpendicular to how you lay rather than dig a hole because I toss n turn. Big props to you and Aaron for putting history on film to honor a great lady, Grandma Gatewood.
You know I have been putting off my first hiking trip thinking I need a tent, sleeping bag, stove etc. Watching this made me realie tht I don't. Just take what I have & go out. Thanks dixie. This is a fantastic & beautiful video.
About the hikers of the A.T. Those two big volumes.
Looks like Grandma Gatewood was tough!
I have read an account of her hike in that big collection of journal
What a lovely tribute to an amazing woman. Such a cool idea. My favorite part was that you wore granny panties!
Incredible idea and well executed. A very humble and true way to pay homage. Well done.
Awesome job. What she endured from her husband to a triumphant hiker is resilience and determination. Well done Dixie awesome awesome job. The ending at the grave was amazing and placing the flowers, epic ending
Awesome – i really enjoy expeditions like this, that our ancestors did, their equipment and troubles. Very well done!
This is incredible.
03:48 – "A Nylon Tent, Made to Sleep Two, Adds Only 10.5 Pounds to a Pack" !!! I wonder how much the canvas tent I took on my first backpacking trip (White Oak Canyon and Old Rag Mountain when I was 12 years old) weighed.
This just goes to show that your body and mind are capable of doing and getting used to things that are way beyond their comfort zones. Heck, plenty of modern people would look at any kind of backpacking and think that it's outrageously uncomfortable and primitive. I have a ton of respect for Grandma Gatewood.
I did the same thing on a canoe trip. Locked the keys in the car at the OTHER end of the river. After a 10 mile canoe, we had to walk close to 20 miles back to the truck.
I put the hot rocks in my wool socks but if they are too hot when you put them in it will burn them.
How lovely! I'm rereading "Grandma Gatewood's Walk" at the moment and loved seeing you honour her memory like this.
Grammy gatewood is HOT!!!
Reenacting, and period research, is something that enlarges, and enhances our perspective on life. So much is lost when we are allowed to believe that history began the day we were born; congratulations on the completion of a great accomplishment .. Cheers.
Rocks are a great idea for keeping warm. Dig a trench for the hot rock and cover with a couple inches of soil. Will stay warm all night. Thanks for sharing your experience. Stay well and be safe.
Oh my gosh! I am from this region of Ohio, and it was so lovely to see you hiking in Hocking Hills. The end of this video really got to me. Grandma Gatewood is such an inspiration… and you are too!
Excellent ! Thanks for sharing this adventure with us and thanks for honoring Grandma 👵.
Behind ever great man is an even better woman (except Lincoln – Mary had some issues). Theodora who refused to give up the purple. Martha who patched all the gear for the rev war soldiers, Olga of Kiev…..well she is just a different one. You are getting there….. hats off
She’s probably one of your guides, from the spirit world that is. Love your stuff Dixie.
Dixie, you are an amazing asset to the hiking community. I have been hiking fo 50+ years, and started with things from around the house. I first heard of Grandma when I first started hiking the trail in Massachusetts around 1983. She is an inspiration for all newbies. The whole objective is to get as many people out in the wild as possible. The cure for a wasted life is a long walk in the woods.
Keep up your passion. I've been a sub for a long time .
LOVE this!
You inspire me.

Great video. You even looked old. You could have realistically turned that bag into a drawstring backpack with a piece of rope and that would have been easier to carry.
Dixie, That was a great video. The last 30 seconds though, turned it into something AMAZING! I imagine I will be reflecting on this little piece of nostalgia for weeks to come.
Maybe if you would have thrown dirt over the rocks that were left in the fire pit and rested on that.
One of my favourite videos of yours. Would love to see more things like this. Maybe even a repeat, but in rainy weather? Would love to see how you get on sleeping under a shower curtain! I've just bought the audiobook thanks to this video. I'm only an hour in, but already Granny Gatewood is becoming my hero. Not just for her heroic hiking efforts, but for dealing with ** in general.
