JOHN MUIR TRAIL GEAR GUIDE | Part 4: Extras
Choosing the right gear for through-hiking is imperative to a light pack as well as comfortable and happy campers! I took a lot of time to do the research required to figure out exactly what gear was going to be the best gear to carry with us when we hiked the John Muir Trail. Though the right gear might look different for you we wanted to share the exact pieces of gear we used on the trail, why, and our thoughts on them after hiking the 220+ miles of the JMT. This is the last installment in our four-part video series and details the “extras” we carried while through hiking. Things such as tracking devices, maps, hygiene, and first aid!
Blog post detailing all of this gear as well as links to the specific items mentioned in this video:

Gosh, that's cool you shot film. Was it expensive? Where did you take it to get it developed?
Great video. Do you have the Sunto watch with or without the heart rate monitor?
Very nice gear vids. Thanks. I have most of my JMT gear from prior hikes. I'm getting the BV550 and trowel new from REI as I want to see what fits in advance and would pay more on ebay for new. Go figure! The deuce3 trowel seems like a sound choice. I can't afford a nice watch but will bring my fitbit along. I will also bring my GoPro and new Google pixel 5 phone. Wish me luck in this year's lottery.
Hey guys,
I have a few questions relating to the camera and the batteries, hopefully you can help me out on this
1. I'll be rocking the a6600 on the trail and I was wondering how many minutes do you get out of 1 battery when recording in 4K?
2. How many charges do you get out of the anker battery bank to charge the camera battery?
3. Also, was it easy to ask the staff at resupply spots to charge your stuff, or did you have to pribe them lol?
Cheers,
Chris
I wish I had taken wilderness firstaid and cpr, wilderness EMT is a good one too. Those courses would be sonhelpful since you guys are always so remote. Love you guys and your videos.
B.I.F. Bathroom In the Forrest
A.T. threw Hike? Pacific Crest Trail????
Such a good list. Jotted down a ton. I swear by the CBD patches to help with inflammation. Also, grounding, in my experience does help with reducing inflammation.
I'm confused about Owen's Sony setup… it looks like the lenses are full frame but the camera itself is a crop sensor? Wasn't that a bit of a mismatch?
HI! I loved this series. Thank you so much for sharing all of the information with us here on YouTube 🙂 I'm sure you've gotten this question before, but where are the shorts you are wearing from?? Would you recommend them for hiking long distances? They just look so comfy. Thanks again!
thsank youuuuuu
Back in 1973 I did a week-plus hike in the south island of new Zealand with my Pentax H2 film camera – I had a 35 mm prime as my only lens I felt that it worked out well (I shot slides).
Really great (and honest) reviews. Helpful for everyone – even those just on day hikes!
So stoked about this series
I see you do VW van apparel. You should consider doing some for the Taxa Cricket camper too. There is a Cricket Facebook page too. It is a growing community.
I think with the new Huawei watch with a battery last 14 days you will change your mind on the Suunto🙂🙂
Hey Mac. Wouldn'tt a pamphlet and/or knowledge of Morse code, be prudent for long ventures? We don't know any. But we thought about it one night relaxing by a campfire watching a couple raccoons eating our popcorn.
Hay Mak, have you heard of Kula cloth? Basically a high tech version of the hygiene bandana. Kulacloth.com 😉
Cant find the list of all the products.
I Know I’m asking a lot of questions, but which inverter did you go with? How may watts was it and which brand did you choose?? Thanks again!!
Hey guys, I have another question; how are you utilizing the back seat in your SR5?? Did you take the seats out or build a shelving system?
Hey Mac and Owen!!! I really enjoy your channel and hopefully I will get my rig together and meet you on the road. I do have a question about your new rig; The Vinyl Pop-up top; how is it holding up? How often do you clean it and have you had any issues with it? I had a pop up trailer way back in the day and I constantly had to clean the cloth/vinyl portion so mildew would not build up on it. I know you guys are full time and I wanted to know how the pop top was working out!! Thanks and can’t wait for the next segment!!!
Too much tech……..sad.
Ok, gotta be honest here…the big watch looks great on you! Another great video. Thanks for including the portion on CBD oil. Been thinking about that a lot lately given the increased access even over here on the east coast. SO, not sure if it was in the pack video, how much was your pack weight with a full bear can? I am not a camera person like you guys so I will be less that weight. Be safe out there!
ABOUT THE FILM / WHERE DO YOU GET THE FILM PROCESSED & WHERE DO YOU GET YOUR FILM ? THANK YOU ! BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ! ENJOYED !
Where was the cat during all of this?
Your channel has quickly become my favorite. Watching your videos always seem to brighten my day. 🙂
Check out the thermocell. Maybe not for ultraweight hiking (maybe yes for me!) I use the original one. It sets up a force field that biting bugs hate with about a 10' radius. Seriously my wife would not camp without it. It makes you think there are no bugs around! You can even wear it while you hike. The downside is it makes a bit of trash with butane canisters and foil but NO BUG SPRAY. We don't even bring spray anymore. My son is super allergic to mosquito bites and it has been a lifesaver for him.
Thanks, Owen
Great series Guys I thoroughly enjoyed it thanks for sharing!! Shooting with film, now that's an enthusiast for sure! Looking forward to your additional thoughts on the in reach, I've been thinking about getting one for a while now.
Great video, MAK and Owen! As a paramedic, I highly recommend adding a tourniquet and emergency pressure bandage to your med kit. Insurance definitely worth the weight penalty 🙂
I should have said same ass hole
Damm I bet it was the same person that gave you a thumbs down this time as the last time. Hahaha
Ahh, I’ve fallen prey to your influence – I’ve just bought a new pair of trainers for walking in, the Columbia shirt and a pair of sandals. I’m going on a camping holiday, walking in the Scottish Highlands in a week and I have perfectly good existing gear but watching your review made me do it……. … Oh well, so much for minimalism on my part! But thank you for all the information and entertainment. You’re doing a great job, loving your videos, so organised, structured and thoughtful, and of showcasing your beautiful country.
Did you guys know your final base weight?
Great video as usual – I have the same watch and love it as well for the info it provides for hikes etc. I wear it as well most days.
Film lady!! Good on you! Been using f3hp since made. The 28 is my go to for landscape. Some like 35 but I find the 28 just works with no edge issues. Lots of used out there. Have fun, keep on developing!!
Very informative! And thanks for listing details in the notes. It's been a pleasure to watch the entire pre, during, and post videos related to the JMT adventure.
Love your channel, but as a certified old guy, I have to chuckle at all your battery powered technology stuff. How have I backpacked for 50+ years with a compass and paper map is beyond me. 🙂
Thanks for taking the time to do this series! I had no idea that Dr. Bronner's wasn't biodegradable in water…good to know! I just started giving my 14 year old Golden CBD oil…what a difference! 🙂
Hello again. Would you please add links to the watch and the cbd product provider.
Thanks
This is a very informative video for me. Several things mentioned that I had questions on. Good job on the entire series for gear, food too. Great trail video series of the JMT. I have subscribed. Keep up the good work. Thanks.
