Ohio Hiking-Backpacking Shawnee State Forest, Little Smokies of Ohio
I finally make it to Shawnee to take on Ohio’s toughest hiking trail in late October, “the little smokies of Ohio”, 37.2 miles of brutal accents and descents.
I have hiked all over the state and have never experienced these kind of hills in Ohio! Total elevation gain of over 6,600 feet!
This trip began late in the day and was completed in two nights and 2.5 days. I believe it can be done in one night and two days if you are in good hiking shape.
If you are trying to find hills to train on in Ohio this is your trail! I stayed in campsites 1 and 6. Camp 6 is hard to beat!

The most awesome Shawnee video out there. Great even without the Go Pro. You conquered the dreaded Shawnee backpack trail. I love the wildness out there. Great wildlife photography too. You are ready for the Smokies or the Appalachian trail in the Southern Appalachians.
Dude! I went from Trailhead to Camp 7 as my first ever overnight trip and the hills crushed me! The hike out the next day was better, but I was laughing so hard because after that hike I bought trekking poles!
Do you have a GPS location for the lookout with the picnic table after camp 1?
3:18 “I have this drive in me that makes me want i to conquer ohios hardest trail, i dont know why”
Lol that’s totally me man. I was a heart patient half my life and was told I was not able to get my heart rate up. Became obese (303lbs). One day during corona lockdown I started exercising and next thing you know I’m doing everything I was told I couldn’t lol
Fighting, jiu jitsu, and now hiking.
I only have 2-3 big trails under my belt but I heard about south loop and instantly said “yup, I’m going to make that trail mine!” Lol
I’m trying to do it in one day. Less than 12 hours
Signed up for a 50 mile ultra down there this October. Looks like hill repeats are in my future…
Ever run into the sasquatch there???
Another great video Jason. How would you compare this to your Knobstone Trail hike?

Hey Jason, I am planning to do this trail next week and have not been able to get confirmation that the water caches are being resupplied during covid. If they aren't, are there pretty regular streams to filter from? I have around 6 liters of capacity so I don't mind filling up before camp. Thanks!
Hey Jason, where was that picnic table with the view, do you know if it's accessible by car, or hike in only?
I'm from the area, live in Columbus now. Great job and video. I miss the hills.
Awesome video!! did you do anything for a bear canister or bear sack? My husband and I are going in a couple of weeks and didn't know what to do for bear proofing if we needed to!
city boy
talk to much
Well, I found another trekker to follow. Yay!
Bellefontaine in the house. Good to see this. Cool to have a local doing the stuff my wife and I are into
Awesome video! Another place you would like for longer uphill hikes. Great Seal State Park, awesome views of Chillicothe and Ross Co. at least in the winter. The Sugarloaf Trail is the steepest Trail I’ve been on in Ohio. But I have not been to Shawnee yet.
Great job, I live 5 miles from Shawnee and I cycle and hike there a lot , 22 miles is legit!
Awesome video man!
Great video. Thanks for sharing. You got a new subscriber
Yes, there is an outhouse at camp one, and yes, this trail is very brutal
Looks like I'm going to need some more practice on smaller trails before I attempt this one. Good job. Nice video.
Nice video! I definitely need to get to Shawnee this year. Probably in October too as an end of season challenge. Well Done!!!
Thanks for taking the time to share times and miles, it’s helped me a lot with my planning. Will try a 3 day there soon and planning on staying at camp 6 so I have a shorter day Sunday for my drive back to medina. Enjoyed your “ohio boys” collaboration also. Keep up the great work.
P.s. can you do the foothills trail in S.C. So I can follow your tracks 🙂
How is it for hanging hammocks?
Is there a creek at camp six, sounds like water running ? Thanks great video
Nice job…. New subscriber and I live in the Columbus area. Maybe I'll see you out on the trail one day.
This park is on my list for weekend trips in 2018!! Stellar footage. Really digging your channel!!
Sucks about the GoPro, but the video turned out nice, anyway. Those overlooks are great. It motivated me to move Shawnee up a little higher on my list!
Wonderfull video 🎼🐦
Hey Jason, thanks for the sub. I thought I'd come check out your channel, and it's great… even if you didn't have a go pro for this vid 🙂
I still haven't graduated to trekking poles, I use a home-made bamboo staff. I really like having one hand free while I'm hiking, for getting water, taking pictures, rock scrambling, scratching haha, whatever. So far in the GA southern Appalachians, it has served me well. Having only driven through Ohio on I-75 twice (to Michigan and back) in my whole life, my impression was that it was flat as a pancake haha. Glad to see y'all have some hills! "Peaceful and quiet" are good qualities for any location! Good job catching the deer, I never have my camera handy for wildlife. Great trip, looks like you passed your self-testing!
Great video man, The gimbal would have made it even better! .. but shit happens. Trekking poles are must down there for sure!. As much as i hated my last visit down there, not finishing all 40 miles still haunts me. I've been debating heading there for another solo. My question is, did u find any ticks? I actually just read today that deer ticks are most active in late autumn early winter. My experience tells me its late summer however.
Excellent video
Nice video! Looks like a beautiful area! Love the view just before campsite 2! I was at the actual smokey mountains this year! I am actually getting ready to put those videos up soon myself! I have a bunch of hiking videos up if you're interested in checking them out! Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff!
Enjoyed the hike and a peek at Shawnee State Forest, which has been on my list for a while. Investing in quality hiking poles (with shock absorption) was one of the best investments I've ever made in gear. Could you explain you hammock setup in detail? I'll be checking your other videos out too, including the Burr Oak video and maybe a new Lake Vesuvius video soon? Nice too see another hiker in the Ohio area. Subscribed.
Great video Jason. If it's tough for you, I'm not ready yet!! Treking poles are great. Especially in the hills. I never hike without mine. And they are the $20 specials from Wal-Mart!! Looking forward to your next one.
😂 yes trekking poles are awesome! This might be a good winter trail. I wonder what the trail is like then.
Great trip Jason! Looked pretty brutal… those climbs reminded me of the LHHT… I was feeling your pain! Can't believe how green it was there… We are almost dry in Northern Ohio… Thumbs up buddy!
Nice hiking area and campsites! Cool buck sighting! 2017 was my bad luck year for cameras. I had one camera on a trip with focus problems and then another trip with the SD card fail. Your backup camera overall did good.
I was psyched to hear you were doing Shawnee. I’ve hit a bit of it but only the Northern loop. I have to get time to do the whole thing soon. I laughed at the trekking pole bit. I was skeptical about poles till Shawnee as well. There are lots of cheap carbon fiber poles with cork handles on line. Good call on Vesuvius. I “discovered” it this year and it’s now my favorite Ohio backpacking trail.
Excellent video buddy. Shawnee is a great place.
