I've done the Oil Creek loop twice in the winter when it got nice and cold below freezing.
The firewood situation is amazing. I just kept that fireplace stuffed. The dog and I were nice and warm even without closing in the sides.
I'm finally going to do it in the summer in a few weeks. It'll be nice to be able to do it in Bedrocks 🙂
18 lbs and light weight? Nah. I don't consider myself a lightweight backpacker or anything, in fact I hate the idea of ultralight backpacking, but my base weight for winter (with a bivvy bag included) is no more than 15 lbs. And that includes shelter.
I lived in Erie, PA for many decades and was a nordic ski patroller at Wilderness Lodge. These are my creds.
Oil Creek State Park is 60 miles south of Erie, near Titusville and Oil City, PA.
Your gear is only good for above 20 F. and very little snow. Beginner winter campers need to look at other sources for more suitable cold and snowy weather gear.
Would your water bottles freeze on the outside?
I don't think you could eat any less healthy with the crap you're bringing.
If you tried this in Montana you would die
Great gear tour. Putting the TP back into the empty cardboard roll is genius (It's a HACK)!
love that your using the Gopro Hero, I have the same one and works great! Glad to see someone is using the same one.
Awesome video brother nice load out , keep up the good work and it out from little Rhode island
The lack of signalling (whistle & mirror minimum, EPIRB if remote), lack of navigation (compass, map), lack of decent wilderness first aid / bleeding kit, lack of minimal fire kit, lack of repair kit (sewing, tape, cordage), & lack of emergency shelter is an ENORMOUS & unnecessary risk, to yourself & (more so) to those having to rescue you. If you become separated from your kit, or it fails, what are your PACE plans (Primary, Alternative, Contingency, Emergency)….?? Do ultralight hikers not follow expert advice regards minimum emergency gear?
BTW – not criticising, just want you to be safe. I enjoy your vids.
I carry 50 lbs every camp
Great load out. Nice, Saved weight on your shelter. Thanks for sharing your gear for this trip. Take care.
Haha. I thought I was the only one who took time to pack T.P. that way. Happy I'm not crazy after all.

Love your video's…I learn something every time…
Thanks for sharing. I had a 10 degree burrow econ and took a costco. How did it work for you? Did you put it over or in? Sounds dumb, but the area I struggle with the most. Thanks.
Nice loadout. Thanks for sharing
Nice load out!
I like the way you have modified the Porter with the add-ons, especially the angled water bottle holsters. Very ingenious! – hadn't seen anyone do that before….
I too love snickers when out on trail. I prefer the peanut butter ones, but I’m not going to discriminate. Really cool that you didn’t have to carry a tent. Awesome seeing all the gear. Appreciate you sharing all of your choices. I don’t know a lot about winter hiking so this video helps! Great video! Enjoyed 🙌🏻
Ultralight is 10 lbs or less … in my opinion, trail weight is more important because I am not a ul backpacker but my trail weight, what I carry most of the time is lighter then many Ultralight backpackers…
